修士課程ではホタルジャコ科、とくにオオメハタ属Malakichthysの分類学的研究と骨格の比較を行いました。ホタルジャコ科は東部太平洋を除く温帯域の大陸棚周辺域（水深 100-500m）に分布しています。日本でも底曳漁によってオオメハタやホタルジャコなど本科の代表的な種が普通に漁獲されます。ホタルジャコ科はスズキ目の原始的なグループであると考えられています。スズキ目とは魚類の半数近くを占める大きなグループであり、系統類縁関係はほとんどわかっていません。

修士課程の研究を通じて，オオメハタ属に４未記載種を発見しました。また、オオメハタ属が属として有効であることがわかりました。本研究を進める中で記載分類学の重要性を再認識するとともにスズキ目の系統推定の困難さを実感しました。
